Characterization equipment that can rapidly and non-destructively probe the surface properties of a material is needed in industrial and research laboratory settings. Transient grating spectroscopy offers an instantaneous method to obtain comprehensive thermal, acoustic, and elastic properties of solid materials. However, most TGS systems are large, expensive and complex, requiring trained expertise to maintain. This team is developing a compact TGS device, enabling easy, on-site use.
